Understanding Candle Throw
For those of you who watch my reviews, simply put you know that “I’m old school“…so when I first heard the term candle throw in another review I was a little curious. What in the world it was.
Cold/Hot throw? In it’s simplest terms… cold throw is using the candle without it’s lid -unlit- and letting it’s natural fragrance fill the area. Hot throw is the exact opposite…lighting the candle letting the fragrance notes blend and fill the space.
Back in the day…there was no real term for this except…”Can you smell it upstairs or man this really smells strong or I can’t smell this darn candle at all! But that’s decades ago. Candle speak 2.0 is a whole new thing. Check out a more thorough explanation below.
When choosing a candle, understanding the term candle throw is essential to ensure you get the fragrance experience you desire. Candle throw refers to how well a candle disperses its scent, and it is divided into two categories: cold throw and hot throw.
What is Cold Throw?
Cold throw describes the fragrance a candle emits when it is unlit. It is the first impression you get when you open a candle jar or pick up a wax melt. The strength of the cold throw depends on the quality and concentration of the fragrance oils used, as well as the wax blend. Candles with a strong cold throw provide an inviting aroma even before being lit, making them ideal for enhancing the ambiance of a room without the need for burning.
What is Hot Throw?
Hot throw refers to the fragrance released when the candle is burning. As the wax melts and warms, the fragrance oils evaporate, filling the room with scent. A good hot throw ensures that the aroma spreads evenly throughout the space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Factors like wick size, wax type, and fragrance load play a crucial role in achieving a strong hot throw.
Choosing the Right Candle
For maximum fragrance enjoyment, look for candles with both a robust cold throw and hot throw. Popular options include soy or soy-blend candles known for their even melting and superior scent diffusion.
